Das Buch stellt das künstlerische Schaffen von William S. Burroughs erstmalig in ganzer Breite in Deutschland vor und zeigt zahlreiche Werke, die der Schriftseller mit Brion Gysin, Ian Sommerville und Antony Balch unter dem Begriff "The Third Mind" ab den 1960er-Jahren geschaffen hat, sowie "Collaborations" mit anderen Künstlern wie John Giorno oder George Condo. Ian MacFadyens Essay "Codename Burroughs" untersucht die vielfältigen Verbindungen zwischen literarischer und experimentell bildnerischer Produktion. Entsprechend der Idee der Reihe "The Future of the Past" widmet sich Axel Heil der Bedeutung Burroughs' für die zeitgenössische Kunst. Das Interview von Jean-Jacques Lebel mit Burroughs und Gysin (Paris, 1982) liegt erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung vor. Das Buch entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit James Grauerholz und The William S. Burroughs Trust, Lawrence, Kansas. The book presents a wide range of the artistic work of the writer William S. Burroughs (1914-1997). It shows works that he created during the 1960s with Brion Gysin, Ian Sommerville, and Anthony Balch under the name of "The Third Mind" as well as "Collaborations" with other artists such as John Giorno and George Condo. Ian MacFadyen's essay explores the varied connections between literary and experimental visual production which are also traceable in the interview, made by Jean-Jacques Lebel in Paris in 1982, that is published here for the first time in English. The introduction by Axel Heil focuses on "the future of the past" researching the influence of Burroughs' ideas, experiments and methods on a younger generation of artists.
