High altitude farmer has learnt from his long and close association with pests which aid him in reducing pest populations to low levels without chemical interventions.At the same time, population increases in eco fragile high altitude ecosystem are placing ever-greater demands upon the ecological servicesthat is, provision of clean air, water and wildlife habitatof a landscape dominated by farm defines bio-intensive IPM as the highest level of IPM.Most farmers are resource-poor and cannot afford to invest much on agrochemicals but fortunately there is tremendous folk knowledge (ITK) on plant protection measures which can be utilized for this purpose.This book is a treatise on environmental problems associated with the intensive physical and chemical control of highly simplified crop production systems, and the largely untapped opportunities for knowledge-intensive bio ecological design and management of more complex systems. It summarizes the potential integrated pest and disease management practices which are necessary for reducing reliance on the use of synthetic chemicals and saving environment deterioration.

Dr R.K.Gupta is working as Associate Professor (Entomology) in SKUAST-Jammu,INDIA. His wide research experience spans over 12 years on Biointensive Integrated Pest Management (BIPM). He has done research at ARO, Israel and Ghent University, Belgium. He is a fellow of ESI and published about 35 research publications in reputed journals.
